We thought this park would be a good spot and central to the Petrified Forest and some of the ancient Indian ruins in the area. The park is only 17 miles outside of Springerville. We felt it would be convenient to the necessary shopping we ultimately have to do.
We were surprised at the size and quality this park has to offer. It has full hookup pull through sites, back in sites, dry camping, restrooms and showers, a boat dock, hiking and whatever. This time of year is still the off season. Cathy and I virtually have the park to ourselves. They even have a special rate going right now.
We chose the special rate offer. We pay for five days and stay for seven. I am in a full hookup site and Cathy is a few hundred feet up the hill in a dry camping site. We haven't done much in the way of exploring yet. There is a small peninsula in the lake with a hiking trail we walked last night. It has some amazing petroglyphs all over the sandstone rock.
The only thing this park doesn't offer is an Internet connection. That's right, another spot without a signal! Right now, I'm in front of the Courthouse in the little town of St. John. I'm in the shade and am doing the blog while Cathy is doing some business on her lap top.
How did we ever get along without the Internet and computers?

Before we left Datil Well, we made a stop back into Socorro where Cathy picked up a snail mail delivery. There was a gathering of the Southwest Indian Nations at the time. They were having an intertribal cultural sharing.

We were interested and stopped by the City park to peek in. It was a fair like atmosphere with vendors selling Indian related art and crafts. There were the trinket booths and of course, the food vendors too.

We had lunch while we listened to American Indian music. The Mescalero tribe was dancing at the time. People from other tribes joined in. It was hard to figure out what tribe a costumed dancer belonged to. Maybe, next year they could have a program so us outsiders can follow along too.
I ate a piece of mesquite roasted mutton on fry bread while Cathy had a Navajo Taco. Mine was a little bland, but a spoon full of hot green chili peppers spiced it up enough. Cathy's had the same chili sauce and was on fry bread too.
I will have to close before I lose my battery power completely.
Stay tuned!!
